The Basics of Reiki

Reiki is a complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) that is based on ancient healing methods from Indian (Ayurvedic) medicine and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It is a form of energy healing.

In Ayurveda and TCM, we have 2 bodies, the physical and the energy body. The energy body is like the wiring in a house, with various sockets that can be plugged into in order to tap into their power.

There are 14 primary sockets, or meridians, and 7 chakras, what we can term use boxes for particular form of energy. The primary meridians are connected to our major organs. The 7 chakras are all connected to each other through a central channel that runs from the anus to the top of the head.

Reiki, pronounced RAY-key, means spirit energy. As with most forms of TCM, reiki works to balance and circulate the ki or chi in the body. In Ayurvedic medicine, it is referred to as prana (PRAH-NAH).

There are several forms of energy work, but reiki is noninvasive compared with acupuncture, which uses needles, and acupressure, which uses very firm pressing on certain spots. With reiki, no touch is required. If you or a practitioner do decide to touch, it is a light touch, with no pressure.

Reiki is useful because you can do it yourself, or have a reiki master give you a treatment. There are specific hand positions for head, body, legs, feet and back that the reiki practitioner learns. If you study Level 1 reiki, you can learn the hand positions and heal yourself. If you study Level 2, you would learn the hand movements to help other people, and even your pets, who can also benefit from reiki.

To start practicing reiki, you need to receive instruction and a special ceremony from a reiki master. The ceremony is called an attunement and basically passes on the energy and teachings of reiki, which come down directly from the founder, Mikao Usui of Japan, who organized reiki from ancient TCM practices that are more than 2,500 years old.

He taught more than 2,000 students, and his instructions have been passed down to reiki masters in an unbroken line called a lineage. Check the lineage of the reiki master you wish to study with and if you’re satisfied they are an authentic teacher you can get along well with, you can have your attunement.

Reiki is fun, interesting, and a useful healing path. If you’ve been struggling with pain and illness, it could be just what you’re looking for to help heal you.
