Reiki was introduced to the West after World War II, via Japan. It had been systematized during the late 1800s by Mikao Usui, using method based on ancient Tibetan healing rituals. In order to choose a reiki master, the first thing you need to know is their lineage. In other words, they should be able to trace their teachers, their teacher’s teacher, and so on, all the way back to Usui, so you can be sure their teachings are authentic and pure.
This is important because the path to Level 1 reiki starts with a qualified reiki master giving what are termed attunements. This is a ceremony in which the reiki master helps tune you into your own energy so you can start healing yourself once you learn the hand positions involved.
Different styles of reiki
It is important to note that there are several different styles of reiki. The most common are traditional Japanese and Western. Japanese focuses on specific health and healing, compared with the Western style’s overall enhancement of one’s wellness.
Personality
It is important to find a reiki master you will respect, admire and get along well with, as you take your attunement and begin to study reiki in depth.
Effectiveness
In order to be sure if reiki is beneficial and right for you, start out with a few treatment sessions. If they make a difference to your overall health, then it might be time to go deeper in order to be able to treat yourself at home, or perhaps even eventually advance to Level 2 to start helping others, including loved ones and pets.
Once you’ve decided the treatments are working well, then you can start considering studying in more depth, beginning with the attunement ceremony.
But before you commit to it, here are several other important considerations to keep in mind when choosing a reiki master.
Proficiency
Your master should have worked hard and long to learn their skills. S/He should be able to perform the techniques based on what s/he has learned, experienced, and practiced and treated people for a number of years.
Qualifications
Be sure that your master is certified and qualified. Also check to see if they are a member of any groups or organizations.
Outline of the course
