Reiki is a form of energy-based healing that focuses on the ki or chi (CHEE), our vital life force energy, to unblock it and balance it in order to restore the health of body, mind and spirit.
Reiki uses different hand positions. The hands are hovered over the body, or laid on certain energy centers known as meridians and chakras in order to unblock the energy and let it flow once more, to restore balance and health.
If you’re interested in healing yourself with reiki, the first step is to find a qualified reiki master. They will give you a treatment and you can decide if it works well for you. If it does, you would start to study as a Level 1 practitioner. This means getting what is called an attunement from the reiki master, and then learning the set of hand positions used for healing yourself.
Treatments
Once you know the hand positions, you can use them as part of a regular self-care schedule. The ideal schedule for healing is a 45-minute to 1-hour session a day for 3 days, followed by 18 days of rest until the treatment cycle begins again. This gives your body, mind and spirit the chance to change on the deepest levels after each treatment.
Each treatment has 3 sections, preparation, healing and concluding. There are various activities you can do in the first and last sections, such as meditation and energy work. The healing sessions might also vary, but generally take 3 forms.
Healing the aura
Run your hands around the outline of your body as best you can reach, to strengthen the energy field that protects you from the outside world.
Balancing the energy centers
The chakras and meridians are the main energy centers of the body. The 7 chakras are located in a straight line from anus to the crown of the head and each have its own color and type of energy.
The 14 primary meridians form a straight line near the center of your body, front and back. Each needs to be balanced for 3 to 10 seconds per treatment.
Deeper healing
Each of the 14 primary meridians are connected to our major organs. If you’re having heart trouble you might focus on the meridian connected with your heart.
If you’ve been feeling out of balance in your life or suffering from chronic illness, it might be time to add reiki to your life and see what a difference it can make.
