Most people aren’t born with an innate sense of inner peace, so it takes effort to come up with a routine that fosters it. When you’re whittling down the to-do list that sets you up for inner peace, you may want to consider making a not-to-do list.
Think: What would a peaceful person never do? Let’s look to the experts and see what they refrain from doing – chances are, those habits are the ones you’ll want to steer clear of also.
1) Compare to others
Comparing yourself to other people is never a fulfilling habit. First of all, you never really know a person’s whole story, so comparing is always a misrepresentation of another person’s life. Drawing comparisons rarely makes you feel better about yourself. Your path is your own, so where others are in their life has no bearing on you at all.
2) Try to impress others
Your self-worth comes from you—no one else. The minute you start trying to impress others or worrying about what other people may think about you, you lose confidence in your own beautiful innate qualities. You must accept yourself first, and then whoever else accepts you is a friend.
3) Hold a grudge
You may think that reveling in a bout of anger is cathartic, but it’s damaging to your personal happiness and inner peace. Inner peace is all about reaching a point where you are calm, balanced, and fulfilled with your path in life. The Buddha summed it up beautifully: “Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.”
4) Gossip and spend time with sources of negativity
Do you ever find your sense of humor changing based on whom you’re spending time with? Or maybe you talk about people more when you’re spending time with a friend who likes to gossip? People who have achieved inner peace choose not to hang out with negative influences because they understand that negative, like enthusiasm, is contagious.
5) Depend on others for their happiness
There’s a big difference between counting on friends and family and fully relying on them. Your peace and mental stability can only come from inside you. It may sound counterintuitive, but once you start relying on yourself for your own happiness, the more peacefulness you’ll experience. Better yet, you’ll discover you already have everything you need to claim your happiness, right here in this moment.
